The vast majority of Wolof are members of one of two Sufi brotherhoods.

Mouridism: The Mouride brotherhood is of Senegalese origin. It was founded in the later part of the 1800's by Amadou Bamba Mbacke. To many Mourides, he is the intermediary between themselves and God. He is also considered a national hero, and a liberation hero.
